The concept of a town museum was conceived in 1942 by Charles Dobb, the Town Clerk for Chatteris Urban District Council, in a small display cabinet in the offices Grove House, Chatteris.
~
A Museum Society was formed in 1963 to develop the collection and open to the public. In the mid 1990s the museum moved to the former Doctor's Surgery in Church Lane and to its current location in 2023.
~
The museum has begun a phased reopening and our displays will develop as we unpack over 12,000 objects.

The 1920s themed displays to link with our National Lottery Heritage Fund grant based on the release of the 1921 census data is coming to an end and displays are being redeveloped to begin telling the story of
Chatteris and its people.
