It took two years to prepare and pack the museum for the move to Park Street. The unpacking, assessment of collections, constructing of store rooms and other operational areas of the museum is nearing completion.
There are several anniversaries in 2025 we wish to mark, the 80th anniversary of VE and VJ days in May and August and, of course, 40 years of Chatteris Christmas Lights!
During January we changed our displays to now include:
The Iron Age and Roman settlement at Langwood. An area of higher ground forming a low ridge towards Manea, Langwood Hill has seen continuous settlement since the Bronze Age. We have filled three cabinets with examples from our Iron Age and Romano-British collections featuring pottery, brooches and even everyday items such as a pair of tweezers, nail cleaner and clothes pins.
Cradle to the Grave features everything from christening robes to Mr Meeks' favoured grave digging spade and a funeral bier.
Evidence of Medieval Chatteris has largely disappeared, however, this display features objects found in and around Chatteris in recent years.
Fen Skating features the race meeting held at Carter's Bridge in 1823 attended by several thousand spectators. Examples of Fen Runners and other speed skates are displayed plus a recording on our soundscape of Cyril Horn, a Fenland speed skater, who represented Great Britain at the 1924 Winter Olympics.
An introduction to Fen Drainage featuring a 3D model of Chatteris and the surrounding fen in the late Stone Age illustrating the numerous slow moving rivers surrounding the town. Ever wondered what a Roddon (Rodham) is? Where was the ferry at Chatteris? The complex story of fen drainage will feature in a larger exhibition in the future.
