The museum is entirely volunteer run with the collections owned by The Chatteris Museum Trust, a Charitable Incorporated Organisation

The idea of a town museum was conceived in 1942 by Charles Dobb, the Town Clerk for Chatteris Urban District Council, in a small display cabinet in the offices Grove House, Chatteris.

A Museum Society was formed in 1963 to develop the collection and open to the public. In the mid 1990s the museum moved to the former Doctor’s Surgery in Church Lane and to its current location in 2023.
